OVERVIEW

A well-scaffolded text is one that promotes the use of good reader strategies and strips away difficulty to enable students to access a higher level of text. In order for students at more beginning proficiency levels of English to engage with grade level texts, we need to reduce the amount of text they are looking at and scaffold the original language as well. In this highly engaging session, teachers will be provided with strategies for adapting fiction texts so the MLLs are still exposed to much of the author’s original language without having to wade through as much text. Examples of such strategies include chunking, text-based questions, building schema in order to allow students to access a higher level than their English and reading proficiency would otherwise allow.
