Transform Your Co-Taught Classroom with Universal Design for Learning

OVERVIEW

Co-teachers have the power to substantially increase access to the curriculum and accelerate the achievement for ALL students in inclusive classrooms. This professional learning workshop will support teachers in developing a deeper understanding of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and how to embed the principles in co-taught lessons. This interactive learning opportunity will provide: (1) Universal Design for Learning principles to ensure all students have equal opportunities to engage with content; (2) an overview of current research and co-teaching models surrounding effective inclusive practices; (3) roles and strategies to maximize the power that two teachers with varying strengths and backgrounds can have on student learning and achievement. With embedded co-planning time throughout the workshop, co-teachers will have opportunities to engage and apply best practices shared.

MEETING OBJECTIVES

Participants will be able to...

  • identify and discuss the essential characteristics and key aspects of co-teaching;
  • analyze the main co-teaching approaches along with realistic ways to incorporate UDL practices to reach all learners; and
  • reflect and describe action items to meet the needs of diverse groups of students through co-teaching.
