OVERVIEW

Zero-tolerance policies have resulted in the push-out of Black and Brown students in schools across the country. Restorative justice (RJ) offers educators a bona fide pathway into cultivating a culturally responsive behavior support approach in their classrooms. In this four-part workshop, we will use Dr. Maisha Winn’s (2018) text (Justice on Both Sides) to move our collective understanding of RJ from theory to practice. About a troubling incident take took place at Spring Valley High Winn asks, “Why did the adults present—a classroom teacher with sixteen years of experience and an administrator—feel the need to call the school resource officer into the classroom to deal with a student who was not physically threatening anyone in the classroom” (p. 3)? Sadly, this question is one that we could ask at schools all across the country. Designed as an action-oriented book study, participants in this workshop will gain a solid immersion in the foundational tenets of RJ (including the mind-set shift and new ways of communicating that are part and parcel of this practice), which they will then apply to their actual classroom of students.
